The Thinker
The Thinker in front of the Musée Rodin in Paris
The sculpture The Thinker ( French Le Penseur ) is one of the major works of the sculptor Auguste Rodin and was built from 1880 to 1882 .
The plastic
The original is in the possession of the Musée Rodin in Paris, a copy is available at the grave of the artist in Meudon . The sculpture has a height of 72 cm, is made of bronze and was finely patinated and polished.
The plant was enlarged in 1902 to a height of 181 cm. The monumental version was the first work by the artist in public space.
Model for this sculpture, as for other works by Rodin , was a muscular French prizefighter and Ringer Jean Baud , which usually occurred in red light districts , and in fact was not an intellectual or thinker. He was a professional wood manufacturer from Les Gets, as he was depicted on the Swiss 50 franc note from 1907 by Hodler . The sculpture is intended to represent Dante Alighieri, the brilliant creator of the Divine Comedy . By Rodin's long preoccupation with his work and so also with the boundaries of heaven and hell , the sculptor had fallen into a severe existential crisis . The Gates of Hell , a developed from Dante's Inferno portal for the Musée des Arts Décoratifs - a government contract - occupied him until his death . He created for 186 characters, some of which were also free . So also the thinker who meditates in strong tension, muscular and yet internalized about doing and destiny of the people. This and many more of Rodin's works were groundbreaking for the Modern and proclaimed a new era three-dimensional artistic creation. (Source: Wikipedia.org )
